There are two basic types of hair loss or baldness, baldness by scar and baldness by no scar.
Baldness because of scarring may be due to a skin disease: inflammation, infections of the skin or other (e.g., burns). When the roots are destroyed, hair loss is irreversible.
A far more common cause of baldness is inherited male pattern baldness, where the hair is usually initially lost at the temples and crown of the scalp. This occurs because of an excess of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes the hair follicles to produce thinner hair until they cease to produce any hair at all. Other possible causes of hair loss include iron-deficiency anaemia, an underactive thyroid gland, fungal scalp infections, stress and some prescribed medication.
