What is Influenza?

Influenza is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus. It affects millions of people every year in the UK and is highly contagious, usually peaking in autumn and winter. It is also responsible for significant amounts of absences from work and school, and can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization and death.

There are three types of viruses: A, B and C. The Influenza A virus can infect humans and other animals, while Influenza B and C only infect humans. Type C causes a very mild flu and does not cause epidemics.

Anyone can get influenza but certain groups of people are more at risk. These include those with chronic respiratory disease, weak immune systems, people aged 65 and over and those with diabetes .

The influenza virus changes constantly. This means that the body has trouble defending itself from attacks but also means it can be difficult to develop vaccines to provide 100% protection each year.

How does it develop?

When a person infected by influenza sneezes, coughs or talks, droplets with the virus are dispersed in the air for long enough to be inhaled by another person. The virus can also remain infective on hard surfaces such as door handles so direct contact from one person to another is also possible. with the disease being spread by touch (hand contamination of the virus) and the patient will then spread the virus by touching his or her mouth or nose. The infected person can spread the virus to others within a day of experiencing the symptoms

Symptoms:

  • A high temperature, or feeling hot and cold
  • Dry cough - can last more than two weeks
  • Muscle and joint pains which can last from 3 to 5 days
  • Fatigue - may take longer than two weeks to disappear
  • Headache
  • Clogged nose
  • Irritation of the throat

Some or all of these symptoms may be present.

Influenza can lead to other complications

A possible complication of influenza is pneumonia. This is usually caused by bacterial infection from organisms such as pneumococcal or staphylococcal bacteria. In addition to pneumonia, other infections such as sinusitis and bronchitis are also possible. People over 65 years, or people of any age with a chronic illness and very young children have a greater likelihood of developing complications from the flu. Furthermore, the flu can also trigger a worsening of asthma in people with asthma and worsening of the condition of a person with heart failure, for example.

How to prevent it and cure it?
